How to Let Go When You're Still Holding On

Letting go is one of the hardest things we do. We want change but cling to what feels safe. I was reminded of this while watching P.S. I Love You. In it, her late husband leaves letters to help her move on. But here’s the truth that hit me, no letter, no push, no perfect timing could work until she decided she was ready.
And that’s how it is for us, too. No book, no friend, no sermon can do it for us. Until we move, nothing moves.
The Excuses We Tell Ourselves
I’ve been there. I’ve blamed circumstances. I’ve told myself “later” or “someday.” I even stacked self-help books on my nightstand like some kind of motivational fortress, and never opened one.
Looking at the books didn’t change me. I had to read them. Digest them. Apply them.
It’s easier to stay in the familiar, even when it’s no longer working, than to risk the unknown. But clinging too long only keeps us stuck.
One Small Step to Start Today
They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That’s all it takes, not tomorrow, not next week, but today.
A page a day.
An extra walk around the block.
A moment to breathe, pray, or choose something better.
Change doesn’t start with grand plans. It starts with one step. And then another. And another.
Your Script Is Waiting
Letting go isn’t about erasing the past. It’s about writing the next scene yourself. Not waiting for someone else to hand you the pen.
So here’s the invitation: Take the first step. Small, quiet, ordinary. But today.
Because the hardest part isn’t knowing what to do. It’s deciding you’re ready.
As always, let's journey together word by word.
